FAQ

Small-Kitchen Solutions

Short answers for tight spaces. If your question is not here, describe your setup and we may cover it in a future guide.

Describe Your Challenge

Spices

Where should spices go if my only free wall is beside the hob?

Beside the cooker rather than directly above the burners. Steam and heat dull spices quickly. A rack at the end of the counter run or inside the nearest cupboard door is usually better. More on spice placement.

How long do ground spices stay good?

They are safe for a long time but lose aroma, usually noticeably within a year or two. Whole spices hold flavour longer. Sniff before you use: no smell means little flavour.

Tortillas

Should I keep tortillas in the fridge?

Once opened, most shop-bought tortillas keep longer resealed in the fridge at 5°C or below. Always follow the packet's guidance. Full tortilla storage guide.

Can I freeze tortillas?

Yes. Freeze in meal-sized stacks with baking paper between each tortilla, label with the date and use within a few months.

Is a tortilla warmer worth the space?

Useful but optional. A clean tea towel wrapped around the stack works. A warmer holds heat longer and gives tortillas a fixed spot at the end of your line.

Prep stations

How much counter does a taco station need?

About 60 cm of clear surface, especially if you prep onto a tray. Over-sink boards and fold-down shelves add space when you need it. Arrange the prep route.

How do I stop the counter filling up again?

Give every item a home off the counter, and finish each evening with a short reset: return jars, wipe surfaces and note what is running low.

Pantry

Do I need to decant everything into matching containers?

No. Decant loose dry goods that live in floppy bags. Tins, jars and bottles already stack well and carry their own labels.

What is the best container shape for a narrow pantry?

Square or rectangular clear containers. They sit flush and use the depth that round jars waste. See pantry layouts.
